Castlepook Biotope
Castlepook was managed as commercial forestry through roughly three rotations before a final clear-fell, leaving degraded soil, little biological activity and rapid, sediment-laden runoff. Since 2016 the landowner has been restoring it through assisted natural regeneration, three constructed ponds and sediment-retention features, native and mixed vegetation, and low-intensity grazing. GEIA onboarded the site retrospectively in September 2026. It is a potential project under assessment: the record so far rests on a baseline written up in September 2026 from the project lead’s direct observation and a July 2026 monitoring visit with a trained ecologist, not on a quantitative ecological survey.
